Whether you are quitting smoking or facing any kind of difficulty in your life, the question is whether or not you are big enough to succeed.
I obviously don’t mean big enough in the since of size nor do I mean it in the usual context of being the bigger person.
When we are struggling to make a change it can feel as if we are small and that our problem is huge. It can feel so big that we can’t see our way around it nor can we see over it to where our solution may lie.
It can feel as if the weight of this problem is so great that it can literally crush us.
The problem is that as long as you feel small, and quitting feels large then stopping smoking will feel very difficult if not impossible.
It’s like being at the level of a problem where everyone else is a t fault. My partner smokes, my family smoke, my best friends smoke and my work mates smoke.
It’s going to make it so hard to quit; all of these other people just make my problem even bigger.
There are two strategies that may help you with this.
1. Imagine the packet of cigarettes you smoke starts to get bigger and bigger until it is bigger than you. It has hands and feet and a smirking grin. It points a mocking finger at you and taunts you, saying that you can’t quit that you aren’t big enough.
You imagine the pack getting smaller and smaller, it shrinks down to its original size and then right down to a grain of sand, you then take your foot and crush it into the ground, never to return.
2. This time imagine your smoking habit as an image or a symbol. See it in front of you as a large imposing figure.
Slowly imagine it getting smaller, until the image is small enough to hold in your hands. Then make yourself bigger and bigger, making the symbol smaller, until it feels insignificant, then push it away further and further until it is just a dot on the horizon, and then it disappears completely.
Take a big deep breath, feel the clean fresh air going all the way to the very bottom of your lungs, easily expanding your ribcage and your back. Feeling strong and so much bigger than any desire to smoke a cigarette could ever be.
